## Combining engineering excellence with patented Veolia technologies to provide a sustainable sludge treatment solution

### Following on from the successful upgrade of the co-located wastewater treatment plant at Osberstown, Co. Kildare, Veolia was asked to upgrade the Sludge Treatment facility to provide a solution for all sludge in Co. Kildare.

#### The challenge

Veolia was asked to reduce the operating costs, energy consumption and carbon emissions of the Sludge Treatment facility while providing a solution that would sustainably treat all sludge generated in Co. Kildare.

#### The solution

Our groundbreaking approach to upgrading the Sludge Treatment Facility uses **Advanced Anaerobic Digestion**, or AAD.

AAD is an emerging sludge treatment technology that converts organic waste material within municipal sludge into valuable biogas, a renewable fuel.

Delivering AAD at Osberstown was made possible only by considered use of **innovative new technologies** - each individually designed to work on the site layout and with each other - while maximising the use of existing assets.

#### Value delivered

Veolia’s solution is **saving 8,500 tonnes of CO2** annually, 35 GWh of energy consumption and circa €2m annually in operational costs.
